Lionel Messi has been awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Buenos Aires, in a ceremony held on the day the Argentine captain prepares to play his final match for the national team. The distinction recognises the social, educational, and sporting impact of the number 10's career.

"It is something that has nothing to do, or perhaps it does, with football and what I have achieved in sport. It is a source of pride for me to be able to say that I am an honorary doctor. Starting this day in this way makes it much more special," he stated.

The Argentine star also spoke about the emotions he is experiencing in the hours leading up to the friendly against Benin at the Estadio Monumental.

"It is a very special day, I know it will be difficult, but I will try to enjoy it. I am calm, although as the kick-off approaches, it becomes a little more difficult," he confessed.
